How to Find a Water Leak Before It Damages Your Home

A dripping tap is obvious. A leak inside a wall, under a slab, or beneath the floor is not — and that’s the kind that quietly runs up your water bill and damages your home for months before anyone notices. The earlier you catch it, the cheaper it is to fix.

Watch your water bill

An unexplained jump in your water bill is one of the most reliable early warnings. If your usage climbs but your household habits haven’t changed, water is going somewhere it shouldn’t.

The water meter test

This is the simplest check you can do yourself:

• Turn off every tap and water-using appliance in the house.
• Find your water meter (usually near the front boundary) and note the reading.
• Leave everything off for an hour or two, then check the meter again.

If the reading has moved with nothing running, you almost certainly have a leak somewhere on your side of the meter.

Signs of a hidden leak

• Damp patches, staining or bubbling paint on walls or ceilings.
• A musty smell that won’t go away, or mould appearing in one spot.
• Warm areas on the floor (a sign of a hot-water pipe leaking under a slab).
• The sound of running water when nothing’s on.
• Lush, green patches in the lawn where a buried pipe runs.

When to get it found properly

Once you know there’s a leak but can’t see it, a plumber with leak-detection equipment — acoustic listening gear and thermal imaging — can pinpoint it without tearing up floors and walls on a guess. That precision saves you money: you only open up the one spot that matters. If you suspect a leak under a slab or behind tiling, it’s worth getting it located properly rather than chasing damp patches.
