Interior paint is judged from a metre away, in daylight, by someone who lives there. That is a much harder test than an exterior, and it is decided almost entirely by what happens before the finish coat.

Most interior jobs are some combination of these, and the number of surfaces is the single biggest driver of cost.

The prep is the job. Inside, it also has to happen without turning your home into a building site.
What we do before any finish coat
- Wash down where there is grease or residue — kitchens, bathrooms, around heaters
- Cut back loose or flaking paint to a sound edge and feather it
- Fill holes, dents, old fixings and cracks properly rather than skimming them
- Patch damaged or drummy plaster
- Sand to level fillers and knock back existing gloss
- Prime and seal bare areas, patches, new plaster and stains
And how we work around you
- Floors, furniture and fixtures covered and protected
- Room-by-room where you need to keep living there
- Dust controlled, and the site left tidy at the end of each day
- Access and timing agreed before we start, not negotiated on the day
If a filled patch shows through the finish as a different sheen, the primer step was skipped. That is the most common fault we get called in to fix.
Ceilings, mould and the rooms that keep failing
A bathroom or laundry ceiling that goes mouldy again six months after painting has not been fixed. It has been covered.
Where damp keeps coming back, we look for the cause first — ventilation, a leak, a cold surface that condenses — and say so before quoting a coating. Where a mould-resistant coating is the right answer, we use one. We describe it the way the manufacturers do: it helps resist mould. Nothing in a tin makes a wet room immune.
Colour, sheen and what actually wears
Colour is your call and we will not push you. Sheen is worth a conversation, because it decides how the room behaves over the next decade.
- Flat and matt hide surface imperfection best, and mark most easily
- Low sheen is the usual compromise for living areas
- Washable finishes earn their money in hallways, kids’ rooms and rentals
- Semi-gloss and gloss on trims and doors, where the wear actually happens
- Going dramatically lighter over a dark colour often means an extra coat across the whole job — worth knowing before you fall in love with a swatch

Winter is a good time to paint inside
Exterior work in Melbourne is constrained by temperature and humidity — most exterior products specify a 10°C floor that a Melbourne winter night does not clear. Inside, you control the conditions, so winter is a perfectly good time to repaint, and it is when good painters have availability.
The things to manage indoors are ventilation and drying time rather than temperature. We schedule around that.

Rentals, end of lease and between tenancies
An empty property is the cheapest and fastest interior repaint you will ever get — no furniture to move, no access windows, no working around anyone.
For rental providers and agents we can quote an itemised scope so repair work and improvement work are separable on the invoice, which matters at tax time.

Older homes need a different method
If the house was built before 1970 there may be lead in the old paint, and dry sanding it is not acceptable. If it was built before 1990 there may be asbestos cement in places, which must never be dry-sanded or water-blasted.
On older properties we establish what we are working with before we quote a preparation method, and where the compliant method takes longer, that time is in the written scope.
