Kitchen Renovations: The Plumbing & Electrical Behind the Scenes

A kitchen renovation is the one everyone pictures in terms of cabinets, benchtops and splashbacks — but what actually determines whether it works day to day is the plumbing and electrical behind it all. Get that wrong and no benchtop will save it.

The plumbing side

• Sink and tap relocation. Moving the sink means new water supply and waste lines, and the waste needs the right fall to drain properly.
• Dishwasher connection. Supply, drainage and the right isolation for a dishwasher (and sometimes a second one).
• Fridge water line. Plumbed fridges need a water point run to the right spot.
• Gas for cooktops. If you’re keeping or adding gas cooking, the gas line and connection must be done by a licensed plumber.

The electrical side

• Appliance circuits. Ovens, cooktops and other heavy appliances often need dedicated circuits the old kitchen may not have.
• Power points. Enough outlets, in the right places, at bench height — kitchens are appliance-hungry and old ones never have enough.
• Lighting. A proper plan with ambient, task (under-cabinet) and feature lighting transforms how a kitchen works.
• Rangehood and exhaust. Wiring and ducting for ventilation.

Why coordination matters

The plumbing and electrical rough-in happens early, before cabinets and linings go in. If it’s not planned properly at that stage, you end up with a power point in the wrong place or a sink that won’t drain — fixes that are expensive once everything’s installed.
