7 Signs Your Melbourne Home Needs Rewiring

Wiring doesn’t last forever. In older Melbourne homes that have never been updated, the original wiring may be decades past its prime — and ageing or damaged wiring is a genuine fire and shock risk. Here are the signs worth paying attention to.

1. The home still has a fuse box

Old ceramic-fuse switchboards (the type you replace fuse wire in) usually mean the wiring is of a similar vintage. Modern homes use circuit breakers and safety switches for good reason.

2. Power keeps tripping or fuses keep blowing

Occasional trips happen, but frequent ones suggest circuits are overloaded or there’s a fault in the wiring.

3. Flickering or dimming lights

Lights that flicker or dim when an appliance kicks in can indicate loose connections or circuits struggling with the load.

4. Discoloured or warm power points and switches

Scorch marks, browning, a burning smell, or warmth around outlets and switches are serious warning signs — stop using them and get them checked.

5. Not enough power points

Reliance on double adaptors and power boards everywhere usually means there aren’t enough circuits for modern demand — a sign the electrical system is dated.

6. Cloth or rubber-insulated wiring

Very old homes may still have wiring with cloth or rubber insulation that becomes brittle and cracks with age. This is a clear case for assessment.

7. No safety switches

If the switchboard has no safety switches (RCDs), the home lacks the protection that cuts power in a fraction of a second to prevent electric shock.
